Who gets to go to camp?

Camp for Kids

Art Camp... for kids is designed to build sequentially and to follow the children's curiosity. Working with the environment, 
campers will experiment, ask questions, and engage their senses. 

Each camper will create a handmade field journal to fill with drawings, create maps, notes, and observations. Some artwork may continue drying after camp and will be available for pickup later.

In preparation, with your camper, please collect a few mailing addresses of friends or family members. Campers will be creating handmade postcards, & stamps will be provided.

All art materials will be provided.

Making art is a way of thinking—a way of paying attention. The camp melds traditional art making, with Peter Pan-like play, encouraging students of all ages to find their own answers, to “work with” their environment. The intention is to remove the barriers that keeps art making precious, instead to use one's attention to seek the magical and the real.

Camp for Adults

Art camp... for adults is designed to re-engage curiosity.  Working sequentially, time will be held to write, experiment, ask questions, and engage senses. Grounded in a process-over-product philosophy, each day will be filled with observation, and hands-on making.

We will create a handmade field journal to fill with drawings, notes, and observations. Like camp, each week will be a new experiential adventure. Some artwork may continue drying and will be available for pickup later.

Participants are encouraged to bring a few mailing addresses for friends or family members. We will be creating handmade postcards, & stamps will be provided.

Instructor Augusta Sparks, MA, MFA, is an interdisciplinary artist, and artistic researcher. In the early 2000s, she founded a nonprofit that brought arts education into elementary schools, serving more than 4,000 students. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she created the nationally recognized First Aid Art Kits program for families in quarantine. In her youth, she found great joy as a camp counselor in the woods of Maine, this project is pulling her practice full circle.

How is ART CAMP different from WORKshops?

The camp structure is designed to be topographically and environmentally responsive, themes are more generative, and experiential. Play dictates the time, verses research.

WORKshops are specific in theme and materiality.
